More electric vehicles for a greener Quebec

D26 – The leader of the Quebec Liberal Party, Mr. Philippe Couillard, wants to make purchasing an electric vehicle easier and more attractive to Quebecers and, in doing so, accelerate the fight against climate change by relying on one of our most important resources, hydroelectricity.

Given that the transportation sector is responsible for 40% of Quebec’s greenhouse gas emissions, in a second mandate, a QLP government is committed to:

  • Increasing the support for purchasing an electric vehicle by $1000, bringing the total support to $9000, and earmarking the necessary sums to finance the program until 2020.
  • Increasing the funding for purchasing a home charging station by $200 with a rebate reaching up to $800.

Since 2014, we have helped over 37,600 families purchase an electric or hybrid vehicle, making Quebec the Canadian leader with more than half of the country’s electric vehicles. Enhancing the programs to purchase electric vehicles or home charging stations will allow us to hasten the adoption of this new technology. The infrastructure to support it has also been anticipated: indeed, last June we adopted a law to encourage the establishment of a fast public charging service for electric vehicles that would be completely funded by the increase in sales volumes, without any impact on electricity rates.

These measures, totalling additional investments of $155M over three years, could be financed within the Fonds Vert’s anticipated expenditures, thanks to a collaboration with the management board which oversees the governing and the coordination of the fund.

In Quebec, we are fortunate to have abundant natural resources and to be able to depend on many forms of renewable energy, such as hydroelectricity. This resource allows us to complete huge economic development projects, while using a clean and renewable energy source. The commitment that we are making will allow all Quebecers to benefit from this resource, while making it easier for our families to travel and helping them save money.
