More support for caregivers

The leader of the Quebec Liberal Party, Mr. Philippe Couillard wants to better recognize the important role played by caregivers and contribute to breaking their isolation and reducing their exhaustion by offering them concrete support.

In a second mandate, a QLP government is committed to:

  • Decrease the renovation costs associated with welcoming a senior family member into the home through a new tax credit of up to $2,400;

This credit, which is for one-time use, will allow a property owner to receive a 20% credit on eligible renovation expenses which cost at least $2000 up to a maximum of $12,000.

  • Throughout Quebec, develop various forms of respite services for seniors and adults afflicted with serious illnesses and deploy assistance services to offer better support, including psychological support for caregivers, in partnership with local organizations;
  • Develop a government action plan on caregiving after holding a national forum presided by the Premier which will bring together all stakeholders within the caregiving sector in the first year of the next mandate.

These measures will eventually represent additional annual investments of $40M for the tax credit and for the respite and assistance services. They are added to the commitments made to create 1000 spaces in day centres and 2000 spaces in respite care, as well as to increase assistance from the support program by $300 per person and extend it to an additional 1800 families, for families with handicapped children. In total an additional 89 million dollars annually will help to make life easier for those supporting family members in need.

These measures are also in addition to the annual $200M of investments for home care and to enhance the tax credit for home support, as well as the commitments made to better support handicapped people and their families, and to establish a cap on parking at hospitals and long-term health care facilities and in some cases make it entirely free.

Caregivers make invaluable contributions to our society. We have recognized their work and their rights in our laws. Now we want to offer them better support. In partnership with existing local organizations, we want to offer them more services and make a difference in the lives of these people who make such a huge difference in the lives of their loved ones.
