The leader of the Quebec Liberal Party, Philippe Couillard, wants to give time and money back to Quebecers by encouraging public transportation and making it simpler, more economical, faster and better integrated into our communities.
In a second Liberal government mandate:
- Public transportation will be free throughout Quebec for full-time students and seniors.
- The Passeport mobilité, an application and universal access card, will provide users with access to all sustainable transportation services in Quebec (bus, metro, trains, taxis, car-sharing, bicycle-sharing). To achieve this, a committee will first consult stakeholders to determine the fee structure and the optimal technology.
- The Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec will be called upon to study the possibility of extending the REM toward Mirabel.
These commitments represent additional investments of $200M annually for free public transportation and $5M for the Passeport mobilité. They represent compensation to transit companies for transport and the development of Passeport mobilité.
Ongoing Partnerships
The Liberal government has already committed to working with municipal partners throughout Quebec to study new structured public transportation projects, for example to:
- Develop the Montreal Metro’s Pink Line;
- Develop a BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) project on Notre-Dame Street in Montreal;
- Extend the Pie-IX BRT;
- Allow direct access to downtown via the Mascouche line (in Montreal on the North Shore), including via a mode that is compatible with the REM;
- Extend the western branch of the Montreal Metro’s Orange Line to Montreal and Laval;
- Develop a project at the intersection of Des Laurentides and De La Concorde boulevards in Laval;
- Develop a structured project on Taschereau Boulevard;
- Develop a structured project within the extension of the Metro’s Yellow Line in Longueuil;
- Implement a light rail transit in Gatineau;
- And just recently, extend the Réseau de transport structurant de la Ville de Québec
