QUÉBEC CITY, January 17, 2018. – The government has reached the goal of bringing 1,500 additional human resources into Quebec schools in 2017-2018! Specifically, the equivalent of more than 1,535 new resources has been added, and more than 172 others will soon join them. The news was announced today by Sébastien Proulx, Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports and Minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region.
In order to respond to their schools’ needs, school boards across Quebec have hired teachers, specialized professionals and support staff. Schools have been given latitude and flexibility in their choice of resources, since they are best placed to identify their own needs. The goal is to offer an array of services throughout Quebec schools.
The government has also announced the addition of 500 specialized professionals to the school system by the end of this school year. This influx of resources (speech therapists, occupational therapists, special needs teachers, school psychologists, preschool counsellors, sexologists, etc.) is part of the Tout pour nos enfants strategy, which was announced by the Quebec government yesterday. This strategy will help improve the student services offered in schools across Quebec.
Quote:
The purpose of every action we take is academic success for all students, and the addition of new human resources in schools is part of this effort. I am happy to see that schools and school boards have answered the call and even surpassed expectations. Above and beyond fostering the improvement of services in all Quebec schools, we are putting better conditions in place in order to meet students’ needs and ensure academic success.
– Sébastien Proulx, Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports and Minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region
Key facts:
- The addition of new resources stems from the goals set out in the Policy on Educational Success, announced last June, and the goals of the Tout pour nos enfants strategy, which was announced this week. The Tout pour nos enfants strategy aims to give the 800,000 children aged 0 to 8 an equal opportunity for educational success.
- By 2021-2022, more than 8,000 resources throughout Quebec will be in place, working with youth and adults to help school staff.
