QUÉBEC CITY, June 12, 2018 – Lise Thériault, Minister responsible for Consumer Protection and for Housing, has announced that Québec City will receive $36 million to build 400 social housing units.

Québec City has been awarded these housing units thanks to its status as an agent of the AccèsLogis Québec program, run by the Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ). This status will allow the City to build these housing units on its territory based on its needs.

The new units are intended for families, seniors or individuals with low to moderate income, as well as people with particular housing needs, such as homeless people, people with disabilities or victims of domestic violence. As a matter of fact, 40 units will be built specifically for those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Quotes:

Today’s announcement will enable many people to improve their living conditions and integrate into society more easily in the near future.  As an agent of the Société d’habitation du Québec, Québec City has what it takes to meet the needs of its citizens with regard to housing.

– Sébastien Proulx, Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports and Minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region

Access to housing is a key factor when it comes to fighting poverty and ensuring a higher quality of life for those in need. These new housing units will enable many Québec families to live in a suitable and affordable environment that will encourage their growth and involvement in the community.

– Lise Thériault, Minister responsible for Consumer Protection and for Housing and Minister responsible for the Lanaudière region

Key points:

  • The AccèsLogis Québec program grants agent cities greater autonomy, allowing them to carry out projects that meet the needs of the community and are in line with the development objectives of their boroughs.
  • The budget of the government of Québec for 2018-2019 includes an investment of more than $230 million for the construction of 3,000 social housing units in Québec as part of the AccèsLogis Québec program.
  • What is more, in order to ensure that low-income households benefit from financial aid for housing, a $43 million investment in rent supplements was included in the last budget for some of these new housing units.
  • Of the 3,000 housing units announced, 300 are intended for those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, as well as those with mental health issues, and 100 more units are meant for projects to set up shelters for battered women.
