Following the Chinese government’s decision to suspend the import of Canadian meat, the MNA representing Maurice-Richard and Liberal Critic for Environment, the Fight Against Climate Change and Agriculture, Ms. Marie Montpetit, asked Quebec’s Minister of Agriculture to make the necessary representations to his federal counterpart so that Quebec’s pork industry doesn’t pay the price of the Chinese government’s political decisions.

Recall that in 2015, during an economic mission, the Liberal government was able to acquire an important market share for Quebec pork in China.

The CAQ government needs to hold its ground for Quebec’s farmers and demand that the Canadian government be firm in its discussions with China. I am concerned about China’s decision to suspend imports of Canadian meat products and the impacts this decision might have on our farmers. The government claims to be nationalist, but hides behind the federal government to mask its inaction. The Government of Quebec and the Minister of Agriculture must show leadership to support our farmers.

– Marie Montpetit, MNA representing Maurice-Richard and Liberal Critic for Environment, The Fight Against Climate Change and Agriculture
