MONTRÉAL, July 26, 2018 – In response to the strong growth of the student body at the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), the Québec government is providing more than $55 million to the educational institution to construct a new pavilion, conduct preliminary studies for the construction of a second new pavilion and improve existing infrastructure.

Hélène David, Minister responsible for Higher Education and Minister responsible for the Status of Women, and Dominique Anglade, Deputy Premier, Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation and Minister responsible for the Digital Strategy, made the announcement today during their visit to ÉTS.

The Plan quinquennal des investissements universitaires calls for an investment of $4 million for the studies required for the construction of a pavilion at the site of the former Dow Brewery. It also will also provide $10 million for the urgent work required on the site.

Funding of $42.5 million will also be granted to ÉTS for the construction of another five-storey pavilion on a site adjacent to ÉTS. This project involves the addition of classrooms, teaching laboratories and the relocation of administrative spaces.

Quotes:

The number of students at the École de technologie supérieure is steadily increasing, which means that the construction and outfitting of new teaching spaces and labs are now required to meet the needs of the school’s clientele. The investments we are announcing today will enable ÉTS to become even more involved in knowledge development, 21st century skills development and scientific progress.

– Hélène David, Minister responsible for Higher Education and for the Status of Women

For many years, the École de technologie supérieure has played a decisive role in the Québec economy. These major investments will allow ÉTS to continue training a highly qualified workforce that contributes to the productivity and competitiveness of businesses, thus ensuring Québec’s economic development.

– Dominique Anglade, Deputy Premier, Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation, Minister responsible for the Digital Strategy and MNA for Saint-Henri-Sainte-Anne

The space constraints at ÉTS have a direct impact on its ability to train the engineers that Québec greatly needs. This is an obstacle to our desire to provide facilities that meet the expectation of our institution’s students and researchers. That’s why we are extremely grateful for this essential support, which will help us carry out important projects for the future of ÉTS. The entire industry and the Québec economy will benefit from these investments.

– Pierre Dumouchel, Director General of the École de technologie supérieure
