Expansion of Cinesite in Montreal: 500 new jobs


Cinesite is one of the global leaders in the visual effects and animation industries.  Our government supports this project, which will stimulate the growth, in Quebec, of specialized expertise in the production of animated films, a field that is expanding greatly at the moment.

Making this project a reality is one of the concrete steps that my government is taking to make the Montreal region more competitive with other jurisdictions.  This investment recognizes the talent, the creativity and the quality of the Quebec workforce, and the importance of placing Montreal on the world stage in this cutting-edge field.

Creation of a new studio for animated films

Montreal, February 8, 2016 – The Premier of Quebec, Philippe Couillard, accompanied by the Minister of Economic Development, Science and Innovation and Minister responsible for Digital Strategy, Ms. Dominique Anglade, the Minister of Culture and Communications and Minister responsible for the Protection and Promotion of the French Language, Ms. Hélène David, and the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy, Public Security and Minister responsible for the Montreal region, Mr. Martin Coiteux, announced an investment of $90 million toward the creation by Cinesite of a new studio for animated films.  This investment will allow for the creation of 500 jobs in Montreal.  Cinesite specializes in the production of visual effects and animation for movies and television.  The company currently has 212 employees in Quebec.

Through Investissement Québec, Cinesite will benefit from a loan in the amount of $2.4 million for the creation of its new studio.  A loan guarantee in the amount of $19.6 million will also be granted to the company to provide financial support for its first three movies.

Cinesite chose Montreal to continue the company’s growth, and we can be very proud of that.  The expansion of the Montreal studio will have a definite impact on our economy and on digital entertainment in Quebec.  This project will send a clear message to investors that Quebec wants to help them develop their projects and has all the assets available to ensure that they succeed.
