François Legault’s government is ignoring the cries for help from flood victims in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac. Yesterday, the Coalition Avenir Québec rejected a motion presented by the Liberal Critic for Public Security, Ms. Marie-Claude Nichols, calling for citizens to be granted special status.

The MNA representing Vaudreuil once again stressed the exceptional nature of this situation. 6000 families suffered serious material and psychological damage, having believed they were protected by the dyke, for which both the municipality and provincial government were responsible. Given that they are victims of negligence, it is imperative that the government grant special status to the situation in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac.

The government’s general compensation and financial assistance program for real or imminent disasters is not adapted to these victims’ situations. The government must offer them an opportunity to leave their homes with compensation that is commensurate with their properties’ value prior to the flooding.

The psychological distress is palpable in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac. The flood victims have been experiencing anxiety and uncertainty since last April and the government must act immediately to implement all the necessary measures to compensate them appropriately, while taking the sector’s distinct realities into consideration.

–Marie-Claude Nichols, MNA representing Vaudreuil and Liberal Critic for Public Security.
