Sherbrooke, May 15, 2018. – The Government of Québec will invest $40.2M over five years to consolidate high-quality educational practices in the educational childcare network. Luc Fortin, Minister of Families, Minister responsible for the Estrie region and MNA for Sherbrooke, made this announcement this morning.

This money will fund playground renovation and redevelopment projects for childcare centres. Thanks to these new investments, children will be able to enjoy refreshed, modern play areas for physical activity, socialization and learning, which will promote their overall development and teach them healthy lifestyle habits.  To this end, we are launching a call for projects today.

The investment will also make it possible to:

  • implement a measure to assess the educational quality of educational childcare services and develop support measures for these services through a continuous improvement process;
  • increase funding for home childcare coordination offices for projects to improve the educational quality of educational home childcare services;
  • support research on the factors leading to educational success associated with the general development of children aged 0 to 8, as well as the dissemination and transfer of these results;
  • develop and implement a training program based on the Accueillir la petite enfance educational program and on the child’s educational file;
  • revise the Accueillir la petite enfance educational program and define the essential elements that will have to be implemented;
  • create a financial assistance program for national educational childcare associations for projects aimed at improving quality and educational success;
  • develop two new reference frameworks, one on social and emotional development and the other on cognitive and linguistic development;
  • support educators, especially through the creation of practical tools, in order to improve their work with children who have special needs or have immigrated.

Quote:

Our government wants all children to have the same chances of developing fully and succeeding. The funding announced today will strengthen educational practices in the educational childcare network so that our little ones can have all the tools they need to succeed from birth and throughout their education.

– Luc Fortin, Minister of Families, Minister responsible for the Estrie region and MNA for Sherbrooke

Key points:

  • This financial assistance is part of the Strategy regarding educational services offered for children aged 0 to 8: Everything for our kids.
  • Childcare centres that need to renovate or upgrade their playgrounds will be able to apply for a grant for infrastructure investment projects (SPII), which funds projects with net funding needs of less than $50,000 based on the real costs incurred. For 2018-2019, interested childcare centres will have until June 15, 2018, to submit their applications to the ministry.
  • The Minister also launched a call for infrastructure projects for the year 2018-2019. The grant will be used not only to finance urgent investment projects, but also renovation projects that aim to improve quality, increase lifespan or enhance the capacity of infrastructure. Interested childcare centres have until June 15, 2018, to apply.
