Inauguration of the first service to be offered at Baie-Saint-Paul Hospital

BAIE-SAINT-PAUL, QC, March 23, 2018 – Gaétan Barrette, Minister of Health and Social Services, inaugurated the first service offered by the new Baie-Saint-Paul Hospital today, along with Caroline Simard, MNA for Charlevoix−Côte-de-Beaupré and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Tourism.

This hemodialysis service point will replace the CHU de Québec-Université Laval mobile hemodialysis unit, which has been providing treatment in the region until now. The new service point has six treatment chairs and one back-up machine. Starting April 4th, this service point will be able to treat all 11 patients living in the Charlevoix region who need kidney dialysis treatments, as well as patients requiring longer-term hospital stays, at a rate of three treatments a week. 

This service point is the first unit of the new hospital to open its doors. Construction work on the rest of the hospital is due to be completed this summer. 

In its entirety, the hospital project will cost $263 million and will include an emergency room with eight stretchers, two operating rooms, and 28 beds for short-term medical and surgical care.

Today is an important day for the people of Baie-Saint-Paul and the surrounding area, who can now benefit from hemodialysis services offered in a new hospital located right in the heart of the community. This hospital will soon be open to all. Its completion demonstrates the willingness of our government to fund infrastructure projects that not only meet the needs of citizens, but ensure they are met close to home.

This initiative is part of a larger effort to provide the population of Charlevoix with even safer and more modern health infrastructure, from Baie-Saint-Paul to Malbaie. It shows our government’s attention to the needs of the population of Charlevoix, particularly in terms of accessibility of services for people suffering from chronic illness. Our priority is to offer these vulnerable people the largest possible array of services close to home, in order to avoid constant trips that could negatively affect their health and quality of life.

Key facts:

• The mobile hemodialysis unit, which is currently serving parts of the Capitale-Nationale region, has reached the end of its life. It can only offer its services to eight people from Charlevoix, while three are forced to make trips to Québec City health centres to receive treatment.
• The next steps towards the realization of the new hospital include the transfer from its old location, which will begin September 17, and moving patients, which will take place September 23. Acclimatizing the employees to their new workplace will be done between June 9 and September 15. This project should be completed within budget, and, with a slight adjustment due to the G7 summit being held in Charlevoix, on schedule.
