The demolition of Saint-Coeur-de-Marie Church, which is located in the heart of Quebec City, has driven the MNA representing Verdun and Liberal Critic for Culture and Communications, Ms. Isabelle Melançon, to ask the Minister of Culture and Communications, and Minister responsible for the French Language, Ms. Mme Nathalie Roy, for a status report on at-risk heritage buildings in all of Quebec’s regions.

Ms. Melançon believes that a status report would provide a better global appreciation of heritage buildings so that they can be better protected and so that we can avoid situations like that of the Saint-Coeur-de-Marie Church.

After years of legal conflicts and debate, the demolition of the Saint-Coeur-de-Marie Church is just devastating to me. It is the perfect example of a demolition due to abandonment, which is the case for a number of heritage buildings. That is why, in a spirit of constructive collaboration, I am asking Minister Roy for a status report on at-risk heritage buildings. Ms. Roy has promised to take action to protect our heritage, so today, I’m asking her to walk the talk. Our heritage is our history, it’s so important that we preserve it!
