Montréal, July 26, 2018 – Gaétan Barrette, Minister of Health and Social Services, announced that the Montreal General Hospital modernization project falls under the Québec Infrastructure Plan (QIP) as a “project under review,” which will allow the necessary research and a feasibility study for the project.

The project aims to make workspaces more functional and modern and to meet the growing needs of the population, while conforming to the latest standards for safety, prevention and control of infections. The work will prioritize the modernization of the operating block, the sterilization unit and the emergency room. The studies will determine the other areas that will benefit from improvements.

Quotes:

The work being considered for the Montreal General Hospital will consolidate its downtown activities by offering patients and staff an innovative environment that is conducive to healing and at the cutting edge of technology. This initiative is part of our efforts in recent years to equip Québec with much more modern health infrastructure that is optimized to better meet the current needs of our society.

– Gaétan Barrette, Minister of Health and Social Services

I am pleased that this vast project will begin with the government’s support. Marked by innovation and excellence, the mission of the Montreal General Hospital extends well beyond providing care. Prevention, research and teaching are also at the heart of its activities.

– Martin Coiteux, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy, Minister of Public Security and Minister responsible for the Montréal region.

Key points:

  • The overall cost of the Montreal General Hospital’s modernization project is currently estimated at a maximum of $300 million. $2 million has been allocated to all necessary research and the feasibility study. The Montreal General Hospital Foundation intends to put $30 million toward the project.
  • Once the project is completed, the Montreal General Hospital will offer a range of exclusive services such as tertiary traumatology, psychiatry/mental health care, orthopaedics and geriatrics. It is one of three tertiary trauma centres for adults in Québec and the only one located in downtown Montréal. Each year, it receives about 10,000 trauma victims, including more than 1,500 with serious injuries requiring intensive care in operating and rehabilitation rooms.
  • The modernization project is included in the reorganization of recent years so that the McGill University Health Centre can optimally consolidate its activities in two separate sites: the Glen Hospital Campus and the Montreal General Hospital.
