RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, QC, June 1, 2018 – Today, as part of the government’s efforts to provide living environments of the highest possible quality for people with declining independence and to better adapt facilities to their needs, Gaétan Barrette, Minister of Health and Social Services, and Jean D’Amour, MNA for Rivière-du-Loup–Témiscouata and Minister responsible for the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, announced that the construction of a new residential and long-term care centre (CHSLD) has received the green light.

The planned work consists in building the new facility that will house the 75-bed CHSLD, in premises with a total area of 5,800 square meters. Upon completion of the project, all the residents of the current Centre Saint-Joseph will be relocated there. The new CHSLD, which will be built on the site of the Grand-Portage Hospital, will offer living units consisting of single rooms, in a safer environment adapted to current needs and standards.

Quotes:

An infrastructure project like this testifies to our desire to give seniors and people with decreasing independence safe and comfortable living environments that are as accessible as possible and located in their own communities, near their families and friends. By supporting the continuation of this initiative, we are ensuring that we will meet the needs of these people, while taking into account the current and future challenges of our network in this respect.

– Gaétan Barrette, Minister of Health and Social Services

I am very pleased to see this project take a new step towards its realization. Once completed, the new CHSLD will provide an even more welcoming and safe living environment for users, offering more privacy thanks to the single rooms. This infrastructure project shows how important the well-being of our region’s residents is to the government, especially when it comes to the fulfillment of our seniors, thanks to the creation of an environment that will improve their quality of life.

– Jean d’Amour, Member of Rivière-du-Loup–Témiscouata and Minister responsible for the Bas-Saint-Laurent region

Key points:

  • On the financial front, this project, which will cost $30 million according to preliminary estimates, will be almost entirely financed by the Ministère de la Santé et des Services Sociaux. The Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux du Bas-Saint-Laurent will contribute an amount of $693,3000 for the creation of a 14-bed living unit adapted to the specific needs of residents with behavioural and psychological symptoms related to dementia.
  • With the authorization announced today, the design phase can now begin. The functional and technical program can be developed as well as the project study and the various steps leading to the final plans and cost estimates. During this phase of the project, the facility will work with the Société Québécoise des Infrastructures (SQI), which has been appointed to manage it. The SQI will carry out, coordinate and supervise all the next steps of the project.
