For a third time, the CAQ government has refused to allow parliamentarians to hear solutions offered by experts to protect Quebecers’ personal information. The opposition deplores that despite the population’s concern, the CAQ is choosing to turn a deaf ear.
Data leaks that occurred among others at Desjardins, Revenu Québec, Capital One and Industrielle Alliance over the last weeks have underscored the urgent need to take action. The government, however, is balking at any proposition that aims to find solutions that would reassure citizens.
The Liberal Critic for Finance, Mr. Carlos J. Leitão, tried to reason with the government this week, suggesting that the Public Finance Committee shed light on this worrisome situation. He was rebuffed.
This afternoon, the government rejected an initiative mandate request that was submitted to the Committee on Institutions.
These refusals are in addition to the request presented on August 28th, before the Committee on Public Finance. Three requests, three refusals.
Every day, our personal information is used whether for a simple transaction or to open a bank account or obtain a credit card. The data leaks from the past few months are sounding the alarm, telling us that it is urgent to improve protection. The government cannot do it alone; it needs to find solutions by hearing from experts. We are taking about Quebecers’ personal data. The CAQ needs to put its pride aside and act in the best interests of the entire population.
