The Quebec Liberal Party is entering a new phase in its history with the official launch of the leadership race. This democratic process will culminate in the election of the next leader at a major convention in Quebec City on June 14.
What you need to know:
- The QLP leadership race will be held on January 13, 2025. Anyone interested in running may do so from that date until 5 p.m. on April 11, 2025;
- Candidates will need the signatures of 750 members in good standing from at least 70 counties and 12 regions, at least 350 of whom must be new members;
- A deposit of $40,000 is required, and the election expenses limit is set at $400,000;
- Each constituency is allocated 3,000 points, of which 2,000 points are assigned to members aged twenty-six and over and 1,000 points to members aged twenty-five and under as of June 14, 2025. The total number of points that can be allocated is 375,000;
- Preferential voting will be used. The elected candidate will be the one who obtains 50% plus one of the total points allocated according to the weighting formula applicable to each constituency and age group;
- All members in good standing will be eligible to vote.
A leadership race lasting 5 months and divided into 4 main phases:
- Consultation (January 13 – April 11): Submission of candidacies.
- Communication (April 12 – June 8): 5 national debates to engage and convince.
- Voting (June 9 – June 14): Six days to vote before the big convention.
- Leadership convention (June 14): Closing event in Quebec City to unveil the new leader.
