Quebec media are experiencing a crisis. The Minister of Culture and Communications, Ms. Nathalie Roy, must stop dragging her feet and take action in this file. It has been a year and nothing has been done and, in the meantime, many media have found themselves in precarious positions for months.
The MNA representing Verdun and Liberal Critic for Culture and Communications, Ms. Isabelle Melançon, asked the government to grant emergency financial assistance to support these media until a long-term solution is proffered.
For months now, Ms. Melançon has been calling for the Minister of Culture to support the Quebec media sector as it is the mortar of our democracy. Quebecers from across Quebec’s regions must have access to quality information.
The MNA representing Verdun has submitted numerous proposals to the Minister over the last few months in an effort to resolve the crisis. In particular, she suggested that the Ministry reduce its purchase of government advertising space from digital giants and instead use Quebec media outlets.
Ms. Melançon also submitted the idea of using the sums generated from the taxation of Internet giants to create a fund for media. Minister Roy, however, completely dismissed these proposals.
Today we learn that time is running out for Groupe Capitales Médias. The Minister has been dragging her feet for months and today, once again, she has no solutions to offer. This situation is not new, she has known about it for months. Hundreds of jobs are at risk, as is access to regional information. It’s not time to reflect, it’s time to take action.
