QUÉBEC CITY, July 4, 2018 – Luc Blanchette, Minister of Forests, Wildlife and Parks, accompanied by Jean D’Amour, Minister for Maritime Affairs and Minister responsible for the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, took advantage of a day in the great outdoors in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region to announce that the Government of Québec is providing $10 million in financial assistance to the corporation Le Territoire Populaire Chénier inc. for the implementation of its Réserve Faunique Duchénier development plan.

This financial assistance will help improve and modernize the sanctuary’s services, which will consist of hunting and fishing activities combined with recreational and tourism activities that meet the needs of a clientele looking for distinctive and high-quality wildlife and recreational products. The investments will allow the Réserve Faunique Duchénier to:

  • Modernize and diversify its accommodation
  • Convert its facilities to green energy
  • Undertake wildlife management projects
  • Ensure high-quality customer service

In addition to consolidating the sanctuary’s activities, the company will stand out as a destination of choice, thus stimulating economic and tourism activity in the Haut-Pays de la Neigette in the RCMs of Rimouski-Neigette and Les Basques. Located between the Parc du Bic, the Parc du Témiscouata and the Réserve Faunique de Rimouski, the area will become a top nature destination.

Quotes:

My day in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region allowed me to rediscover a nature destination that is recognized at home and abroad.
For hunting, fishing and outdoor enthusiasts, the region is a gem that deserves more attention. Our government is proud to contribute to the recreational and tourism development of such a beautiful natural resource and to participate actively in the economic vitality of the region.

– Luc Blanchette, Minister of Forests, Wildlife and Parks

After 40 years of operation, the Réserve Faunique Duchénier faces daunting challenges, including the need to update its accommodation facilities and its services in a context where the clientele is changing and their needs are no longer the same. Numerous positive spin-offs will result from the announced investment, and the whole Bas-Saint-Laurent region will emerge as a winner from the three-year development plan that will be implemented here.

– Jean d’Amour, Minister for Maritime Affairs and Minister responsible for the Bas-Saint-Laurent region

Key points:

  • The Réserve Faunique Duchénier is a structured wildlife area dedicated to recreational activities and the conservation and presentation of wildlife. Unlike most wildlife sanctuaries, the Société des établissements de plein air du Québec (SÉPAQ) is not responsible for its management. Rather, the corporation Le Territoire Populaire Chénier inc. ensures the development and operation of activities and services.
  • The wildlife sanctuary is mainly used for hunting and fishing activities and recreational activities. It is possible to hunt moose, white-tailed deer, black bear and small game and to fish for native brook trout, which is famous even outside the region’s borders.
