Québec, June 5, 2017 – To enable the completion of 148 projects to enhance schoolyards throughout summer 2017 across the province, the Government of Quebec will allocate financial aid of nearly $3 million.
Sébastien Proulx, Minister of Education, Leisure and Sports, Minister of Families and Minister responsible for the Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine region, made the announcement today during his visit to École Coeur-Vaillant-Campanile.
Under this program, this establishment will receive $25,000 for the installation of play structures and for field line marking. The Minister also took the opportunity to unveil the projects that are coming together in his riding of Jean-Talon.
We should specify that the financial aid announced is allocated as part of the Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement Supérieur’s schoolyard enhancement measure for the 2016-2017 school year. This measure enables the financing of various projects that school boards are implementing in partnership with the community, with the goal of offering students a physical environment that is stimulating, safe and suitable for physical activities.
The schoolyard is an important place for students since that’s where they come together to be active and have fun. We believe that participation in athletic or leisure activities promotes the feeling of belonging to the school, a key element in student retention. It is therefore essential that they have access to attractive and safe structures that will make them want to come to school. With this investment, we hope to offer them an environment that promotes educational success as well as a healthy, physically active lifestyle.

These investments are part of the 2016-2026 Québec Infrastructure Plan. For the year 2016-2017, today’s announcement brings the amount granted to $1.058 billion, notably for the renovation of schools, in addition to $533 million planned for the construction and expansion of schools (space-increasing measures) throughout Quebec.
