QUÉBEC CITY, July 5, 2018 – Marie Montpetit, Minister of Culture and Communications and Minister responsible for the Protection and Promotion of the French Language, took advantage of the inauguration of The 7 Fingers’ new Creation Centre to announce a grant of nearly $3 million to support the circus arts in Québec. An amount of $1,933,500 was awarded to The 7 Fingers, while $1,000,000 was awarded to the École nationale de cirque.

The government assistance to The 7 Fingers collective in the context of the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications’ capital assistance program is in addition to the $9.4 million previously allocated for the establishment of its new Creation Centre. The grant announced today will be used to acquire specialized equipment and furniture. It will also allow the Creation Centre to connect with other Québec regions, as well as other facilities and networks.

The additional $1 million grant to the École nationale de cirque will help structure the training program and encourage the circus arts sector throughout Québec.

Quotes:

Québec has reinvented the circus arts, creating a phenomenal calling card that is useful on stages around the world. We should take pride in this exciting area of creativity and risk-taking and in all our local talent. The support announced today will allow the circus arts community to continue building on its impressive momentum and valuable contributions to Québec’s artistic excellence.

– Marie Montpetit, Minister of Culture and Communications and Minister responsible for the Protection and Promotion of the French Language

The Ministère de la Culture et des Communications has been there for us since day one. With today’s announcement, our Creation and Production Centre will be well equipped and ready to take off this fall. The team at The 7 Fingers is committed to transforming this place into a hive dedicated to the creation and export of original productions, while also being open to the community.

– Nassib El-Husseini, CEO of The 7 Fingers

With more than 35 years of experience in training circus artists and teachers, our institution is in an excellent position to transfer our expertise. The École nationale de cirque will be able to continue enthusiastically developing training in Québec in order to promote the practice of circus arts from an early age.

– Éric Langlois, Executive Director of the École nationale de cirque
