The Government of Quebec responds to filing of the Chamberland Commission report


The Government of Quebec is responding to the filing of the report by the commission on protecting journalistic sources, headed by Justice Jacques Chamberland.

Stéphanie Vallée, Minister of Justice, Attorney General of Quebec and Minister responsible for the Outaouais region; Martin Coiteux, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy, Minister of Public Security and Minister responsible for the Montréal region; and Marie Montpetit, Minister of Culture and Communications, have reaffirmed their desire to respect the spirit of the recommendations, which they will analyze and implement to the extent possible.

On November 11, 2016, members of Cabinet endorsed the creation of a commission to investigate the protection of journalists’ sources. The commission was mandated with investigating and making recommendations on police practices in investigating matters that could infringe on the confidentiality of journalistic sources, on practices related to the obtainment and execution of warrants that could infringe on the confidentiality of journalistic sources and on the best practices to implement in order to respect the confidentiality of journalistic sources.
