The MNA representing D’Arcy-McGee and Liberal Critic for Native Affairs, Mr. David Birnbaum, wants National Indigenous Peoples Day to be an occasion for the CAQ government to acknowledge First Nations and Inuit people’s primordial role and indispensable participation in building the Quebec of today. He also wants the Coalition Avenir Québec to reaffirm its intention to conclude new agreements and maintain the existing nation to nation relationships which are based on respect and collaboration.
On this Day Mr. Birnbaum is also committed to reiterating his request that the government quickly respond to the report pursuant to the National Enquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. He also wanted restate the request he made to the Minister responsible for Native Affairs, Ms. Sylvie D’Amours, to implement the report’s third recommendation, WE ASK that the Quebec government prioritize and implement a Government Action Plan for social and cultural development of First Nations and Inuit peoples.
The report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls calls on all of us to do better to ensure that we offer security and well-being, as well as equal opportunities to all of the Native peoples with whom we share this territory. I invite the CAQ government to do more and better in this file and demonstrate stronger leadership. Over two weeks ago I asked the Minister responsible for Native Affairs, Ms. Sylvie D’Amours, and her colleagues the Minister responsible for the Status of Women and the Minister of Public Security, to study the National Enquiry Report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, respond to it and implement the report’s third recommendation. It has been radio silence from the government since then, especially from the three ministers mentioned above.
– David Birnbaum, MNA representing D’Arcy-McGee and Liberal Critic for Native Affairs
