In relation to the horrible tragedy that occurred in the port sector of Beirut, Lebanon, the Leader of the Official Opposition, Ms. Dominique Anglade would like to reiterate her full support, as well as the solidarity of her whole political party to the Lebanese community established in Quebec.

As the international community unites to rapidly deploy emergency aid to Lebanon, Ms. Anglade is convinced that the Quebec Government will collaborate in mobilization efforts and that Quebecers will demonstrate solidarity with the Lebanese community as they move through these difficult times.

That is why yesterday, in a show of solidarity, the Leader of the Official Opposition asked Premier Legault’s Cabinet to fly Quebec’s flag at half mast over the National Assembly, and she thanks the government for agreeing to this highly symbolic gesture for the people of Lebanon.

This morning, Ms. Anglade also spoke to Mr. Antoine Eid, Consul General of Lebanon in Montreal, to reiterate her support and to express collaboration and compassion on behalf of Quebec’s Official Opposition.

On behalf of the Quebec Liberal Party and on my own behalf, I would like to reiterate our wholehearted solidarity with Quebec’s Lebanese community as they face this terrible tragedy in Beirut. Know that we are by your side and that we will accompany you through this tragic ordeal.

–Dominique Anglade, Leader of the Official Opposition and MNA representing Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne

Behind the dreadful images broadcast yesterday from Beirut, there are thousands of Lebanese people experiencing unprecedented human tragedy. It is a catastrophe that has echoed throughout the world, as well as here in Quebec. At this time, my thoughts go out to the victims, their families, the people of Lebanon and the diaspora settled here with us. Quebec must support the Lebanese people. It is in this spirit of solidarity that I would like to meet with the Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie to invite the Government to use the means at its disposal to express Quebecers’ support to the people of Lebanon and to offer her my collaboration following this tragic event.

–Nicole Ménard, Official Opposition Critic for International Relations and La Francophonie, and MNA representing Laporte

A few years ago, l visited Beirut as part of my ministerial functions and I was captivated by its beauty and by its people’s hospitality. The images of the devastation break my heart. It is an unspeakable tragedy that also affects many Quebecers of Lebanese descent who are going through hours of anguish for loved ones who are still there. My thoughts are with the people of Lebanon.

–Christine St-Pierre, Official Opposition Critic for Higher Education and MNA representing Acadie
