The Inquiry Commission on Relations Between Indigenous Peoples and Certain Quebec Public Services must mark a turning point in our relations with indigenous communities, according to the MNA representing D’Arcy-McGee and Liberal Critic for Indigenous Affairs, Mr. David Birnbaum.
In his report, the President of the Commission, Mr. Jacques Viens, raised disturbing findings that emerged from the Commission’s broad and comprehensive approach over its close to three years of work.
The government needs to create a mechanism to monitor the recommendations with the Offices of the Québec Ombudsman, as well as establish a timeline for their implementation to ensure that they are not forgotten.
Finance Minister Éric Girard’s next economic update would be a perfect occasion for the government to show a real willingness to deploy the necessary resources.
This serious and urgent report calls on all of us to act. The systemic discrimination that Commissionner Viens observed demonstrated that First Nations and Inuit people continue to be deprived of equitable public services that are respectful of their needs. Now governments and institutions need to take account of this report and implement concrete, ambitious and measurable action. The Official Opposition is committed to doing its part.
