The Liberal Critic for Health, Mr. André Fortin, seized the opportunity presented by World Organ Donation and Transplant Day to once again ask Minister Danielle McCann to reverse her decision to close the Organ Retrieval Centre at Sacré-Cœur Hospital in Montreal.

It is within the Minister’s power to reinstate the services. The backroom decision made last Friday was a purely administrative one, and one which sorely lacks humanity. She should be thinking about the numerous patients who are waiting in the hopes of a transplant instead of managing squabbles among doctors.

The centre was established in 2013 with the goal of saving more lives by increasing access to intensive care beds and operating rooms, and by ensuring the presence of a team dedicated to organ retrieval. Close to 1000 retrievals have been carried out since it opened.

I am once again asking the Minister of Health to do the right thing. If she really has patients’ best interests at heart, she must keep the Organ Retrieval Centre at Montréal’s Sacré-Cœur Hospital open.

–André Fortin, MNA representing Pontiac and Liberal Critic for Health and Public Health
