However, a significant portion of the route consists of side-by-side lanes without a median, which increases the risk of head-on collisions.<\/p>\n<p>Between January 2019 and November 2024, the S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec recorded more than 3,800 collisions on this stretch of road, including 47 that resulted in serious injuries and 28 fatal collisions. In March 2026, two coroners recommended widening the road to four lanes along its entire length.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A clear and realistic timeline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A liberal government is committed to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Begin design work on the entire Highway 50 project as soon as the candidate is elected;<\/li>\n<li>Initiate and complete, during the first term of office, the widening to four lanes of the 17-kilometer Lachute\u2013Mirabel section;<\/li>\n<li>During the first term of office, begin work on widening the 9.5-kilometer stretch between L\u2019Ange-Gardien and Thurso;<\/li>\n<li>Maintain and complete the installation of temporary guardrails on the other sections;<\/li>\n<li>Complete the expansion of Highway 50 to four lanes within the next 10 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The PLQ also confirms that the urgent and necessary repair of the Labrosse Viaduct will be among the Ministry of Transportation's priorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The CAQ has reneged on its promise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the CAQ had promised to complete the four-lane Highway 50 by 2032. Two years later, it halted the work, citing a lack of financial resources. Since then, no clear timeline has been presented for resuming the project.<\/p>\n<p>The CAQ is now proposing to prioritize the installation of guardrails along the entire length of the highway. However, these guardrails were originally intended to be a temporary measure, pending the widening project.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPeople in the Outaouais and the Laurentians have been waiting far too long. Guardrails can immediately improve safety, but a temporary measure cannot become the CAQ\u2019s permanent solution. Our commitment is clear: we will proceed in phases, with specific timelines, to truly complete the four-lane Highway 50.
