Québec City, April 12, 2018. – In order to support families that choose to educate their children at home, an additional recurring amount of $4 million will be granted to school boards as of the 2018-2019 school year. This financial assistance will make available various resources to students, including textbooks, teaching materials and professional resources (psychologists, psychoeducators, specialized educators, remedial tutors, speech therapists), in addition to providing families with access to school, sports and recreation facilities.

This financial assistance is in addition to the recurring amount of $3 million granted in 2017-2018 under the measures for homeschooled children at the elementary (measure 11043) and secondary (measure 11053) school levels in the school board budgetary rules.

Sébastien Proulx, Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports and Minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region, made the announcement today in the context of the activities of the Parliamentary Committee that is examining the draft regulation on homeschooling provided for in Bill 144 this afternoon.

It should be noted that the draft regulation on homeschooling favours a flexible and balanced support model that places the child’s interests at the centre of the supervision process. This approach compares favourably with other homeschooling models elsewhere in Canada, some of which also call for ministerial monitoring.

Quote:

All students in Quebec must have the same opportunities to succeed, regardless of the method of instruction chosen by their parents. For those who decide to opt for this route, the financial assistance will guarantee access to a range of resources that are available to students who attend school and ensure the success of their learning projects. Educational success must be accessible to everyone.

– Sébastien Proulx, Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports and Minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region

Key points:

  • This investment is part of the measures for educational success announced in the government’s 2018-2019 budget.
  • The financial assistance announced today will be made official in the school boards’ budget rules for the year 2018-2019 following the enactment of the draft regulation.
