L’Étang-du-Nord, June 25, 2026 — In the presence of Quebec Liberal Party leader Charles Milliard, Mr. Gil Thériault was officially nominated as the QLP candidate for the Îles-de-la-Madeleine riding.

A native of Havre-aux-Maisons in the Magdalen Islands, Gil Thériault is currently the director of the Association of Coastal Fishermen of the Magdalen Islands. After studying communications in Quebec City and traveling the world, this native of the Magdalen Islands chose to settle there, where he lives with his small family and has been actively involved in his community for several decades.

Gil Thériault is a well-known figure in Quebec’s fishing industry, particularly in the area of seal hunting, a field in which he has developed in-depth expertise that he has been able to share on the international stage.

Deeply rooted in his community, the PLQ candidate recently became a city councilor for the Havre-aux-Maisons and Pointe-aux-Loups district and a member of the Canadian Rangers. Active on the ground, he understands the day-to-day realities of his community and the challenges faced by the residents of the Magdalen Islands. His desire to continue his involvement in provincial politics is thus a natural extension of his public service career.

An excellent communicator and popularizer, Gil Thériault has, over the years, worked as a journalist, food columnist, lecturer, and photographer. He is also the author of several books, including Les Îles de la Madeleine: de mer et de lumière, published in 2011 by Éditions de l’Homme, A Culinary Journey Around the World, published by La morue verte in 2012, as well as*Acadian Rainbow: Houses of the Îles de la Madeleine*, published by Éditions Broquet in 1996.

“I am very excited to be running as a candidate for Charles Milliard’s Quebec Liberal Party to represent the region that is close to my heart and the people I love. Several issues are close to my heart, particularly those concerning fishing—the economic engine of our archipelago—as well as the relationship Quebec must maintain with Ottawa. We must prioritize an approach based on collaboration rather than division. The renewal that Charles Milliard embodies for the PLQ, for Quebec, and for the regions is exactly the kind of government the people of the Magdalen Islands deserve.”

— Gil Thériault, QLP candidate for the Îles-de-la-Madeleine

“Gil Thériault fully embodies the distinctive character of the Magdalen Islands. He represents what it means to be a Madelinot: a passionate advocate for the identity and realities of his community, particularly the fishing industry. Very close to the people, he has represented them at various levels—whether on the municipal council, as a journalist, a speaker, or an author. His run for provincial office is simply the natural extension of his commitment to his community and to his people.”
