2017-2027 Québec Infrastructure Plan

RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, QC, March 26, 2018 – A large investment of more than $202 million was announced today by Hélène David, Minister responsible for Higher Education and Minister responsible for the Status of Women, to revitalize all college-level learning establishments in Quebec. The financial aid will help with the asset maintenance, the elimination of asset deficits, information technology development and building maintenance.

Of that amount, $184.5 million will be allocated to the Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur’s 2017–2027 Québec Infrastructure Plan. This plan includes the investments for all higher education establishments for the 2017‑2018 school year.

The Bas-Saint-Laurent region will receive investments of nearly $16 million. Cégep de Rivière-du-Loup will receive nearly $2.6 million in financial aid to offer its students high-quality, modern and safe equipment and infrastructure. Cégep de Rimouski will receive nearly $7.9 million, Cégep de La Pocatière nearly $3 million and Cégep de Matane more than $2.3 million.

An additional amount of $17.8 million will be made available to all college-level learning establishments for the upkeep of their buildings. This special financial aid will, for example, go towards increasing security on campus and in dorms.

Eastern Quebec regional hub for higher education

Minister David also revealed an additional investment of $500,000 from the Government of Quebec to set up a regional higher education hub in the Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine regions.

The aim of bringing the Université du Québec à Rimouski and CEGEPs in the region together is to establish a concerted recruitment strategy between higher education institutions in the two regions and to develop continuity between college education and university education. The educational establishments also wish to work together to attract students and motivate them to stay within the region.

By attracting more students, the hub will become a real driver of growth and jobs in Eastern Quebec. This will require continued collaboration between higher education establishments and all of the area’s socioeconomic players.

Quotes:

Asset maintenance and the quality of the infrastructure in college-level learning establishments are important elements for a prosperous and healthy network. The Government of Quebec is investing in the future because it wants to give students the opportunity to upgrade their education and put it into practice with the help of cutting-edge equipment, promoting the development of a large and competent labour force in all regions of Quebec.

– Hélène David, Minister responsible for Higher Education and Minister responsible for the Status of Women

The Government of Quebec supports the initiative for a regional hub in Eastern Quebec because it believes that bringing together resources will help the workforce grow. I am certain that the strategies put in place will allow the students to put down roots in the Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine regions and encourage them to pursue their education at the university level.

– Jean D’Amour, Minister for Maritime Affairs and Minister responsible for the Bas-Saint-Laurent region
