The MNA representing D’Arcy-McGee and Official Opposition Critic for Mental Health, Mr. David Birnbaum, has spent the last weeks repeatedly asking the government to seriously and quickly consider one of our society’s greatest scourges; mental health problems.

Today, he submitted a petition with the names of over 7,000 Quebecers to the National Assembly. The petition asks for the Minister of Health and Social Services, Mr. Christian Dubé, to adopt a publicly funded universal psychotherapy program as quickly as possible. It also requires that the program be delivered by licensed professionals and cover the fees for up to 15 sessions. It must also be available for a broad spectrum of mental health issues among adults and children.

I asked the Legault government to take action in mental health and provided a number of proposals. I suggested an initiative mandate by the Health and Social Services Committee so that experts could be heard, I asked a number of questions during question period, I even questioned the minister during an inquiry and we asked for a universal public psychotherapy program to be implemented. It is time for François Legault to listen to our proposals and do what needs to be done to improve the quality of life of the many Quebecers who are suffering during these difficult times.

–Mr. David Birnbaum, MNA representing D’Arcy-McGee and Official Opposition Critic for Mental Health
