Montreal, June 16 — In the presence of Quebec Liberal Party leader Charles Milliard and several local party members, Marc Tanguay was officially nominated as the PLQ candidate in the LaFontaine riding.
First elected in the June 11, 2012 by-election in LaFontaine, Mr. Tanguay is now seeking his sixth consecutive term. A true pillar of the PLQ for more than seventeen years, he currently serves as the Official Opposition’s House Leader and is the spokesperson on ethics, democratic institutions, Canadian relations, the Canadian Francophonie, family issues, and the Election Act. His peers entrusted him with the party’s interim leadership on two occasions: from November 2022 to June 2025, and again in December 2025. In total, Mr. Tanguay led the Official Opposition for nearly three years, guiding his colleagues through periods of institutional turmoil without ever losing his bearings. Recognized for his mastery of parliamentary procedure and his ability to unite his caucus, he embodies the legacy and continuity of the PLQ.
A lawyer by training, Mr. Tanguay holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Laval University and a law degree from the University of Montreal. Admitted to the Quebec Bar in 2001, he practiced as a commercial litigation attorney at Stikeman Elliott from 2001 to 2007, then served as Chief Compliance Officer at GE Capital Canada from 2007 to 2010. As an instructor at the Quebec Bar School, he has gained extensive experience in law, risk management, and ethics. A member of the Liberal Party, he served as president of the Quebec Liberal Party from 2009 to 2012, before winning the LaFontaine by-election in June 2012.
Throughout his terms in office, Mr. Tanguay has served as spokesperson for health, justice, access to information, family affairs, the economy, and energy. Deeply committed to Rivière-des-Prairies, he has been fighting for over a decade to improve access to health care in LaFontaine: he has tirelessly called for more family doctors and health care service points for residents in the area. On the issue of public finances, he has emerged as the Liberal voice opposing the CAQ’s record deficits and their impact on Quebec’s credit rating, advocating for a return to fiscal discipline.
Mr. Tanguay’s commitment extends far beyond the walls of the National Assembly. Deeply committed to LaFontaine, he has been building strong ties with community organizations and seniors in the Rivière-des-Prairies area for over a decade.
“Since 2012, I’ve learned that citizens’ trust isn’t something you can simply decree—it must be earned, with every term in office and every case won. LaFontaine deserves better: more doctors and sound public finances that enable real services in a neighborhood in eastern Montreal that has been neglected for far too long by the CAQ government. This isn’t just political rhetoric—it’s what the residents of LaFontaine tell me, at every door, in every conversation. I’m running for a sixth term driven by the same conviction I had in 2012. With the energy of a united Liberal team determined to do better for everyone, under the leadership of Charles Milliard, we will form the next government.”
— Marc Tanguay, QLP candidate in LaFontaine
“Marc is one of the most respected figures in our caucus, and for good reason: few members of the legislature have given as much to the Quebec Liberal Party. On two occasions, his colleagues have entrusted him with leading the party through difficult times, and each time, he has risen to the challenge with the same energy, rigor, and dedication. A formidable leader in the National Assembly, Marc embodies the noblest aspects of public service. His knowledge of the law, procedure, and the issues at hand makes him a legislator of rare effectiveness. The residents of LaFontaine are very fortunate to have him as their representative.”
