QUÉBEC CITY, February 22, 2018 – The Order of Excellence in Education has been created to recognize and acknowledge the work of those who make education a success in Quebec. A first in the history of Quebec, this highest of distinctions will underline the remarkable contributions of various people who work in education and higher education.
Sébastien Proulx, Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports and Minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region, and Hélène David, Minister of Higher Education and Minister responsible for the Status of Women, made the announcement today. They took advantage of the opportunity to announce that the first call for nominations will take place from March 1 to May 14, 2018.
Inspired by the Ordre des Palmes académiques established in France in 1808 by Napoleon, the Quebec Order of Excellence in Education will officially recognize the merit of those who have played or still play a significant role in the field of education in Quebec.
It will recognize people from all levels of education, from early childhood to university, both from the public and private sectors, and from all regions. The Order will have three titles: member, distinguished member and member emeritus.
Like other Orders in Quebec and around the world, the Quebec Order of Excellence in Education will be the responsibility of the Order’s Council, which will be established to review nominations and recommend a maximum of sixty nominations per year for all titles to the Ministers of Education and Higher Education. The Council will be composed of ten members, jointly appointed by the ministers.
This distinction will be accompanied by insignias in the form of medals. To design the insignias, a call for proposals is being issued to the community of professional artisans in Quebec, including the community of jewellers and both jewelry schools in Quebec, to submit project models to the Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur. The call for proposals will be open until April 4, 2018.
The Quebec Order of Excellence in Education will recognize the contribution and merit of exceptional people that work in education. This initiative is in keeping with the government’s desire to value education, schools and the people who work in them, as expressed by our Policy on Educational Success. It is important to recognize the expertise and the never-ending commitment of people who work in education, because they play a decisive role in the educational success of students, and their work benefits our entire society.
– Sébastien Proulx, Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports and Minister Responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region
The creation of the Order demonstrates the importance we place on education and higher education and, especially, on people who work in education. In Quebec, we are lucky to count on passionate and dedicated people who place students at the heart of their actions. Our government is constantly working to identify and provide the best possible tools to promote the success and accomplishment of all students.
– Hélène David, Minister of Higher Education and Minister responsible for the Status of Women
- The creation of the Quebec Order of Excellence in Education, whose motto will be “Leur réussite, notre devoir” (Their success, our duty), is intended to:
- Recognize the merit of people who work in the field of education;
- Highlight the significant local, regional and national contributions of the people who work in the education system;
