The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) officially begins its leadership race.
The QLP Executive Council appointed Me Nicolas Plourde as returning officer and set up an electoral committee to ensure the smooth running of the election, in compliance with the Party's official documents and the Election Act.
What you need to know
The PLQ leadership race begins today, January 12, 2026. Those interested in running will be able to do so until February 13, 2026 to 17 h. If several candidates qualify, a convention will be held on March 14, 2026 to elect the next leader.
Candidates will need the signatures of 750 members in good standing from at least 70 counties and 12 regions. A deposit of $30,000 is required, and the election spending limit is set at $120,000.
Weighted voting system by constituency
Each constituency is awarded 3,000 points, of which 2,000 points are allocated to members aged twenty-six and over, and 1,000 points to members aged twenty-five and under. The total number of points that can be allocated is 375,000. Voting will be by preference.
The elected candidate will be the one who obtains 50% plus one of the total points according to the weighting formula by riding and age group. All members in good standing at February 19, 2026 to 17 h will be eligible to vote.
