Biography
An experienced social worker specializing in mental health, Agathe Owona is making the leap into provincial politics with the Quebec Liberal Party. An immigrant mother originally from Cameroon and a fully integrated Quebecer, she embodies a calm, thoughtful, and rigorous leadership style grounded in integrity, responsibility, and respect for human dignity. Reserved yet determined, she prioritizes listening, collaboration, and the pursuit of sustainable solutions—qualities essential to serving the public good. Driven by a deep sense of public service, she now hopes to put all her expertise to work for the citizens of Les Plaines.
Her international academic background—a master’s degree in the humanities and a master’s degree in international human rights law from Lyon, a master’s degree in sociology from Cameroon, and a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Montreal—gives her a solid understanding of public policy and governance mechanisms.
At the CIUSSS de l’Est-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, she supports people facing mental health challenges and handles complex situations that require sound judgment, composure, and leadership. Her experience at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has also enabled her to develop recognized expertise in legal analysis, the defense of fundamental rights, and the management of particularly sensitive situations.
A resident of Terrebonne, Ms. Owona serves on several boards of directors and is actively involved with the Réseau des femmes en Action, where she helps promote women’s leadership and celebrate diversity. Mental health and access to social services are at the heart of her political commitment, as are the defense of fundamental rights and good governance. Her background as an immigrant and her identity as a Black woman have fostered a particular sensitivity to issues of equity, but it is as a fully integrated Quebecer that she hopes to bring to the National Assembly a unifying, compassionate voice deeply rooted in the community, serving all citizens of Les Plaines.
